Pylos Geoarchaeological Field School 2025
Program Objectives
The program is designed to equip participants with key skills across a range of archaeological disciplines, including:
- Excavation & Surveying – Hands-on training in fieldwork methodologies, from excavation practices to large-scale landscape surveys.
- Geoarchaeology – Interpretation of ancient environments through landscape analysis, stratigraphy, and environmental reconstruction.
- High-Tech Archaeology – Application of advanced technologies such as GIS mapping, drone (UAV) surveys, 3D modeling, and geophysical prospection.
- Laboratory Science & Conservation – Insight into archaeometric methods, material analysis techniques, and conservation practices for archaeological artifacts.
- Site Management & Heritage Protection – Development of strategies for the management and preservation of archaeological treasures.
Program Structure
Training from experts at the Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO) and the Archaeological Museum of Pylos.
3 weeks | 30 hours/week | ECTS: 3 – US credits: 1.5
Practical work in excavations and topographical surveys using GIS, drones, and geophysical diagnostic methods.
3 weeks | 34 hours/week | ECTS: 3.4 – US credits: 1.7
Training at the Archaeometry Laboratory in Kalamata, applying cultural technologies to archaeological research.
1 week | 36 hours/week | ECTS: 2.4 – US credits: 1.2
Exploration of the legendary monuments of Messenia and Laconia, from Mycenaean tombs to medieval castles. Training in the sustainable management of cultural sites and the protection of cultural heritage.

The program is aimed at students and researchers in fields such as archaeology, history, anthropology, classical studies, cultural heritage, and cultural technologies. No prior field experience is required – only a passion for discovery and exploration!
The cost of participation is €2,900.00 and includes:
- Tuition fees
- Accommodation (air-conditioned double rooms with private bathroom in Pylos and Kalamata)
- Meals (buffet breakfast, light lunch, and dinner)
- Daily transportation (to and from the field)
- Excavation tools, equipment, and specialized instruments during field research
Early bird registration (by May 30, 2025), grants a 20% discount on the program fee. Scholarships and additional discounts are available (please refer to the program brochure for details).
The program is offered by the University of the Peloponnese. According to legislation, participants who successfully complete the program will receive 10 ECTS / 5 US credits.
